A Music Student's Guide to Zoom

In the last few years there has been a change in how students can get private music lessons. Obviously, the application Zoom has had a major effect. During the pandemic I was teaching upwards of 40 lessons a week via Zoom and observed many problems and benefits using the software. The following thoughts should help students and parents prepare and make the most of the Zoom lesson experience.

Preparation is the key to success. As a teacher I try to make sure a student has all the materials they need before the lesson, and I expect the same from the student. Both teacher and student need to have access to the material that is to be worked on during the lesson.

Use Zoom on a computer rather than a phone or tablet. The sound quality and the control is much better and you can use a hardwired network connection for best results.

Use headphones or earbuds to help with echo and to be able to hear more details.

When possible, use an external microphone for better quality. I am currently working on a recommended list of affordable solutions. For now, use what you have.

Login to Zoom early and have your area set up well before your lesson so that you are not rushed. Typically, your area will have your computer on a desk or table beside you, with your music stand on the side. Have a good chair (no arms) facing the music stand. Yes, you need to face the music (sorry, I love that pun).

Test your audio and video before your lesson and double check the following audio settings within Zoom. Automatically adjust microphone volume should not be checked. Under Audio Profile, check Original Sound for musicians, High Fidelity Music Mode, and Echo Cancelation. This will help you get the best sound.
